Jamaica is a homophobic society. In this Caribbean country, life can terrible for homosexuals. It can be extremely dangerous to be a homosexual in Jamaica. Living proudly as a homosexual in Jamaica is not possible.
Unlike some places where being gay is illegal, it is not exactly illegal to be homosexual in Jamaica. However, having anal sex is illegal.
What is the Jamaican government doing to protect it’s own LGBT youth?
Prime minister Portia Simpson-Miller ran an election campaign in favor of protecting the rights of the LGBT community. “No one should be discriminated against based on their sexual orientation,” said Simpson-Miller.
However, since her election, no legislation has been passed to protect the rights of the LGBT community. It’s status quo.
One government official blamed the problems associated with the LGBT community on the parents. Alric Campbell, the PNP Youth Organisation President says that “parenting has an immense role to play in all of this. Most of the people living in the [LGBT] were rejected by their families.”
The government has no ability to make changes says Campbell. “If parliament passes the legislation without the people strong support than parliament will pay the price.”
For the forseeable future it seems like living in the LGBT community in Jamaica remains a threat.
